More coronavirus cases and hospital admissions: RIVM

More cases of coronavirus are being reported in the Netherlands although the key R, or reproduction number, has gone down slightly to 1.04, public health institute RIVM said this week.

The number of people testing positive at a regional health board testing centre is up 14% and the number of virus particles in waste water increased by 50% in the period between December 12 to 18, the RIVM said.

Hospital admissions are also showing an upward trend and on Thursday, 747 people were being treated in hospital for coronavirus, 46 of whom were in an intensive care ward.

The patient monitoring agency LCPS says it expects a further increase in hospitalisations in the coming week, but says it is hard to provide an accurate prognosis because of the Christmas break.
