In total 12 Dutch players are taking part in next month’s darts world title fight, including number 3 seed Michael van Gerwen who won the Players Championship Finals on Sunday.

The PDC World Darts Championship takes place at London’s Alexandra Palace from December 15-January 3 and has a line-up of 96 players, competing for some €2.9 million in prize money.

Five Dutchmen are among the top 32 ‘order of merit’ players who move automatically into the second round of the competition – including Raymond van Barneveld who recently jumped back up the rankings with his run to the Grand Slam semi-finals.

A further five made the grade via the Protour and two picked up a place via an international qualification round.

An emotional Van Gerwen said after Sunday’s win he is dedicating his seventh Players Championship Finals win to daughter Zoë. ‘I said if I win the trophy again it’s going to be yours,’ Van Gerwen said.

The 11-6 win against England’s Rob Cross was the fifth title of the season for Van Gerwen. He has also won the Premier League Darts, World Matchplay and the World Grand Prix in 2022.
