PSV Eindhoven have been drawn against Sevilla in the play-off round for the Europa League, while Ajax will play Union Berlin.

The tie will reunite PSV’s veteran striker Luuk de Jong with his former club. He won the competition with Sevilla in 2020, when he scored twice and was named man of the match in the final against Inter Milan.

‘It’s a fantastic draw for me personally,’ said the 32-year-old. ‘I’m looking forward to seeing the people at the club again.’

Sevilla are currently 17th in La Liga, while PSV are top of the Eredivisie after beating Ajax 2-1 in Amsterdam at the weekend.

Ajax themselves face a tough test in Berlin against the team that topped the Bundesliga until last weekend, when they suffered a shock 5-0 reverse at Bayer Leverkusen.

The matches will be played on February 16 and 23 next year.

The plum tie of the round pits Barcelona, with Frenkie de Jong, against Manchester United, coached by former Ajax boss Erik ten Hag. Ten Hag tried unsuccessfully to lure De Jong to Old Trafford over the summer.

Feyenoord have already qualified for the next stage, the round of 16, by virtue of winning their Europa League group last week. AZ Alkmaar also bypass the knock-out round in Europe’s third-tier competition, the Conference League.
