Eredivisie clubs Vitesse Arnhem and RKC Waalwijk were on the wrong end of upsets by amateur clubs in the first round of the Dutch cup.

Vitesse, who won their first league match under new manager Philip Cocu at the weekend, lost on penalties to Noord-Brabant club Kozakken Boys despite twice taking the lead.

Lars Hutten fired in a long-range free kick in first-half injury time to cancel out Bartosz Bialek’s opener, before Lowie van Zundert levelled the scores again eight minutes from time.

Bialek looked to have won the game in the last minute of normal time, but the goal was ruled out and the club from Werkendam went on to win the shootout 5-4.

RKC’s good early season form, which has taken them to seventh in the Eredivisie, were comprehensively beaten 2-0 by Gelderland side De Treffers.

Gavin Vlijter and Brian Campman scored the goals for the Second Division club in a win that sparked wild celebrations. ‘Everyone here over the age of 18 is off their faces,’ said captain Ricardo Ippel when he was interviewed later in the canteen in Groesbeek.

Scare for Emmen

Relegation-threatened Emmen needed extra time to get past ADO ’20 from Heemskerk, despite playing against 10 men for 80 minutes following the dismissal of Ruben Doesburg.

Feyo Glim gave the home side the lead after 58 minutes, but Emmen hit back seven minutes later through substitute Richairo Zivkovic, before Azzeddine Toufiqui scored the winner in the 98th minute as ADO wilted.
