Period poverty: Free tampons at 1,000 locations in NL

Poverty aid group Armoedefonds, which supports organisations working to help people on very low incomes, has now established more than 1,000 places where women and girls can pick up free tampons and pads, Nu.nl reported on Wednesday.

In September 2021, the agency had set up some 200 points where free menstruation products could be collected but ‘things have spread out like an oil slick,’ the organisation told Nu.nl. It expects to have 1,300 by the end of the year.

Women and girls can pick up products, including reusable cups and pads,  in community centres, schools and libraries as well as at food banks, the Armoedefonds said.

No proof is required to benefit from the scheme because the agency wants to ‘keep the threshold as low as possible,’ a spokeswoman said.

The project is funded by donations of both products and cash.
