Ajax are out of the Champions League after a 3-0 home defeat by Liverpool and must now hope to move down to the second tier Europa League competition.

It was the fourth Champions League defeat in a row for the Amsterdammers, and the third with a goal difference of at least three.

Nevertheless, coach Alfred Schreuder was keen to stress what went well after the game. ‘We did great against Liverpool in the first half,’ he said. ‘The team played a lot better than they did at Anfield. And that is a major advance, even if it is not enough.’

Ajax are currently four points clear in the Eredivisie and that shows the way ‘the football, the game and the team building are going,’ he said.

Ajax will take a 4-0 margin to Glasgow when they meet Rangers for the final game of the group stage.
