The Rijksmuseum is understood to have a promise of a loan of Vermeer’s ‘The Lacemaker’ for a blockbuster exhibition starting in February next year.
Earlier this week, the museum announced that 27 of Vermeer’s 35 works would be united for the show, but that number has now ticked up to 28.
At a private event at the Rijksmuseum on Friday evening, Rijksmuseum general director Taco Dibbits said that the French had agreed to loan another work for the exhibition, ‘The Lacemaker’, which is in the Louvre in Paris.
During the exhibition, the Rijksmuseum intends to use the latest technological techniques to scan Vermeer’s scarce surviving paintings to understand more about how he worked.
Earlier this week, the museum announced that non-invasive scanning of The Milkmaid revealed in more detail items painted over, and the bold, quick underpainting of the work.
The exhibition, which started selling tickets this week, will run from February 10 to June 4 next year.
