A header by Joël Matip in the 89th minute of the game gave Liverpool a 2-1 win over Ajax in their Champions League tie on Tuesday night.

The victory ended Ajax’s seven-match winning run in the Champions League group stage.

Ajax coach Alfred Schreuder told Ziggo Sport after the game the Amsterdammers had been playing against a top team.

They have even more intensity than we do,’ he said. ‘The reality is that Liverpool are further ahead than us. When it gets physical, they gain the upper hand.’

Ajax’ next match in the competition is against Napoli on October 4.
