King Willem-Alexander has cancelled a trip to California and Texas on doctors’ advice as he is recovering from a lung infection.

The RVD, which represents the royal household, told NOS that he would also be scaling back commitments in the Netherlands. However queen Máxima will go on the state visit to the US, from September 6 to 9.

‘Work in the Netherlands will go ahead, although at a reduced level,’ the RVD reportedly said.

Yesterday, the king visited Ter Apel asylum registration centre to hear about the plight of asylum seekers, but was regularly seen coughing and given medicine by a nurse from Artsen zonder Grenzen.

The emergency medical service is on hand to help asylum seekers with health issues after desperate scenes of overcrowding and the death of a three month baby in the past week.
