The tornado which hit the Zeeland town of Zierikzee on Monday, and in which one person died, left millions of euros’ worth of damage in its wake.

Some 150 homes were damaged by the storm, local broadcaster Omroep Zeeland reported. Between five and 10 homes were so severely damaged that residents will have to live in alternative accommodation for several months, Zeeland housing corporation director Marco van der Wel told a press conference on Tuesday morning.

The tornado ripped off roof tiles and sent trampolines and small trees flying. A 73-year-old woman from Wassenaar was killed and nine other people were wounded. Candles and flowers have been laid at the spot where the woman died.

Schouwen-Duiveland mayor Jack van der Hoek said the impact of the tornado on the community had been considerable.

‘When I went to see the damage I saw neighbours with their arms around each other,’ he said. ‘It shows what a tight-knit community Zierikzee is.’

Van der Hoek added that the total damage is likely to run into ‘millions of euros’.

Primary school De Meie remained closed on Tuesday to give the fire brigade an opportunity to check for unsafe trees around the school. The storm ripped off a glass cupola on the roof of  one of the class rooms where children were present. ‘The children were very frightened,’ school director Maartje de Viet told the broadcaster.
