A 72-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering a 23-year-old man whose body was found in a parked van.

Police seized the vehicle, which belonged to the victim, in the Noord district of Amsterdam on April 12. Search teams had been looking for the delivery courier for two days after he was reported missing by his family. He was last seen alive on April 8.

Further enquiries have established he was shot dead on Parelvisserslaan in Amstelveen, more than 20km from where his body was found in Latherusstrraat. Police said he had connections with organised crime but the motive for the killing is unclear.

The suspect, who has Israeli and Lithuanian nationality, was originally detained in the German town of Leichlingen, near Leverkusen in the Ruhr area, on April 26. He is currently in custody in the Netherlands but has asked to be transferred to Germany.

Police say they believe other people are implicated in the murder and have asked anyone with information to contact them.
