Competition authority to certify telecom comparison websites

The Dutch competition authority ACM will soon start certifying websites which compare telecom company charges so that consumers known the site is independent and up to date.

The certificates, which are voluntary, will be awarded on the basis of eight difference criteria. ‘If you visit a comparison site which has been certified by the ACM, you will know that the information is reliable,’ spokesman Edwin van Houten said. ‘This will help consumers make well informed choices.’

All comparison websites in the Netherlands are currently required by law to use clear language and price information, and state who the website’s owner is.

The certification system has been made possible by the introduction of new legislation covering the telecoms market. As soon as new regulators on the energy market are enshrined in law, the ACM will offer a similar scheme for energy comparison websites, the agency said.
