Monday’s television and radio marathon to bring money for the victims of the war in Ukraine had raised €106 mn by the end of broadcasting.

The money will go to the 11 organisations behind the Giro555 appeal to supply accommodation, medical care and clean water to people fleeing the war.

The radio broadcast began at 6am and continued until 9pm, while the joint television programming- involving public and commercial broadcasters – ran from 8.30 pm to 11pm. Celebrities and television personalities manned the phone lines as the donations poured in.

The Ukraine campaign marks the 48th major fund raising effort by the Giro555 organisations in 38 years.

The most successful to date was the 2004 campaign after the Indian ocean tsunami, which raised €208 mn, while the earthquake in Haiti generated €111 mn.

The government has also agreed to donate a further €15 mn to the campaign.
