Coronavirus surge noted in blood donations, major impact on antibodies
Coronavirus infections and booster infections have had a major impact in the volume of antibodies in donor blood, blood bank Sanquin said on Thursday.
The number of blood donors who have been infected with coronavirus over the past two months is equal to the total in 2020 and 2021, spokesman Hans Zaaijer told RTL Nieuws.
‘Earlier research has shown how quickly antibodies can drop but we are now seeing that antibodies remain longer in people who have been both vaccinated and infected,’ Zaaijer said.
Hospital admissions are still low even though the number of coronavirus infections rose 80% over the past week.
‘Omicron is more infectious but thanks in part to the high vaccination rate in the Netherlands, the infections are mild,’ Zaaijer said. ‘We can be optimistic about the coming summer.’
