Former television presenter Ellemieke Vermolen had a narrow escape during Friday afternoon’s storm when a tree almost hit her car as she was driving through a street in the south of Amsterdam.

Vermolen recognised her car in the video and urged people to stay home and be careful.  ‘I just had a tree on my car,’ she said, next to a photo of the damage. ‘I had so much luck that it hit the back.’

Three people were killed in the Amsterdam region and around 5pm, police issued an NL-Alert, warning everyone to stay home because of the ‘extreme weather conditions’.
