Prison lunch break: inmates protest against pandemic restrictions

A group of prisoners in Rotterdam refused to return to their cells on Monday afternoon in protest at coronavirus restrictions in jail, including stricter limits on visiting hours.

The 18 inmates in Rotterdam’s De Schie jail reportedly locked themselves in the dining area shortly after midday, local news station Rijnmond said.

The prison service said the situation was non-violent and nobody had been injured during the protest.

The main entrance and a cycle path running past the prison were closed as police in armoured vehicles and bulletproof vests arrived on the scene.

A spokesman for the city’s police division said on Twitter that officers were assessing the situation and would intervene if necessary.

We hebben een melding gekregen van een opstand in gevangenis #deschie in #rotterdam. De politie kijkt samen met de @DJI_detentie naar de situatie en grijpt zo nodig in. Meer informatie volgt mogelijk later nog.
