The number of positive coronavirus tests reported to public health institute RIVM in the 24 hours to Friday morning soared by over 17,000 to 57,549 as late results from the rest of the week were incorporated into the total.

The RIVM said Friday’s number is a reflection of the number of infections, and incorporates some figures from previous days which had not yet been processed because of computer problems and undercapacity.

‘We are working hard to find a solution to reduce the backlog,’ the spokesman said. Some 30,000 results from this week have not yet been processed.

On average, the number of positive tests a day over the past week is 39,679, or 27% up on the previous week. The weekly update is currently the most accurate assessment of the number of infections, the RIVM said.
