Three draws and a win put four Dutch clubs into European knock-out rounds
Three draws and a win in last night’s European football have assured AZ, Feyenoord and PSV a place in the knock out competitions after the winter break, while Vitesse is still in with a chance.
AZ drew 1-1 away to Czech club Jablonec, Feyenoord booked a last minute 2-2 draw against Slavia Prague and Vitesse kept their hopes alive with a 3-3 draw against Rennes. PSV beat Sturm Graz 2-0 at home.
Ajax, as group winner, was already through to the Champions League round of 16. In the new Conference League competition, both Feyenoord and AZ topped their groups, while PSV will have to wait two weeks for its Europa League decider, which will determine if the club is second or third in the group, and in which competition it continues.
Four Dutch clubs have not overwintered in Europe since the 2011/12 season, when Ajax, PSV, AZ and FC Twente all made it through the group stage of the Europa League.
The strong performance by Dutch clubs has also boosted the Netherlands’ coefficient – a crucial placing which determines how many clubs can take part in European competition in the coming seasons.
The Netherlands is currently seventh in the ranking, having risen from 14th place in three years.
