The Netherlands has been upgraded to high risk on the latest edition of the European coronavirus map.
Three provinces – Noord-Holland, Zuid-Holland and Flevoland – were already coded red on the map, updated weekly by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), but the rest of the country moved from yellow to red on Thursday.
The map is used by EU nations to determine their rules on international travel. France, Spain, Portugal and western Germany are also code red, with the rest of Europe mostly yellow or green. The south of France is deep red, signifying very high risk.
In an edition of the map published earlier on Thursday two provinces, Flevoland and Overijssel, moved into the red zone, with seven others remaining yellow.
It is the first time the entire country has been red since July, when the government’s decision to relax rules on nightclubs triggered a surge in infections.
