The Dutch embassy in Kabul will be temporarily moved to Qatar, broadcaster NOS has quoted caretaker foreign minister Sigrid Kaag as saying.

Kaag is on a mission to a number of countries in the region, including Qatar, Pakistan and Turkey, to discuss ways of evacuating the hundreds of Dutch and Afghan nationals left behind during last week’s rescue operation.

The foreign ministry has always maintained the embassy would reopen as soon as the situation in the country allowed it and the safety of staff could be guaranteed.

The minister will fly to Pakistan later on Wednesday and Turkey the following day. She will attend a crisis meeting about the situation in Afghanistan with fellow EU ministers in Slovenia following her visit.
