The Dutch women’s football team is out of the running for a medal at the Tokyo Olympics after losing to the USA on penalties in their quarter final match.

The score ended at 2-2 after Lieke Martens missed a penalty eight minutes from time.

The match was also the last for coach Sarina Wiegman who is leaving Oranje after four years to coach the English team. Englishman Mark Parsons will succeed Wiegman.

During Wiegman’s time, Oranje have had a string of successes, becoming European champions in 2017 and only losing to the USA in the World Cup final in 2019.

Elsewhere, the men’s hockey team lost their last group match against Germay 3-1 and will now meet Australia, winner of Group A, in the quarter finals.
