The Netherlands will have to wait until Wednesday evening to discover who they will meet in the round of 16 at this year’s Euro 2020 football championships.

Oranje had already been assured of placing for the first knockout round and a simple 3-0 win over North Macedonia on Monday night was the icing on the cake.

Nevertheless, keeper Maarten Stekelenburg has warned fans not to be too euphoric about the side’s performance.

‘I’ve been in a lot of tournaments and I know how it works,’ he said. ‘You win a couple of times and then people start thinking you will be champions. If it was really that easy, we would have been champions a lot more often.’

Oranje will meet the third placed team in Group D, E or F on Sunday at 6pm in Budapest, and the odds are increasing that this will be title holders Portugal.

‘It does not really matter who we are up against,’ Stekelenburg said. ‘We want the title and that is what we are going for. Of course, you hope to avoid the big names as long as possible, but that is not something we can influence.’
