With the Netherlands scrapping a 2-2 draw against Scotland in a pre-European Championships warm up in Portugal, questions are being raised about how well prepared Oranje actually is for this month’s tournament.

The Dutch campaign kicks off in 11 days time but ‘we should not be too worried [about the Scotland match]’ Memphis Depay, who scored both goals, said after the game. Coach Frank de Boer had opted to play with an experimental 5-3-2 system against the Scots.

‘The trainer wants to prepare us, so we have more options’ Depay said. ‘And if that is what a trainer wants to do, this is what these sort of games are for.’

De Boer reiterated the same point at the post match press conference. ‘We’ve only really trained with this system once, so you cannot expect to be world beating instantly,’ he said. ‘But it is clear that things must be and can be better. We had some good moments, but not enough.’
