Rotterdam’s mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb is self-isolating after testing positive for coronavirus.

A spokeswoman for the city council said the 59-year-old mayor was experiencing mild symptoms and would spend the next seven days in self-isolation.

Aboutaleb’s public duties will be carried out by acting mayor Bert Wijbenga. His role as chairman of the regional safety council for Rotterdam-Rijnmond will be taken over by the mayor of Schiedam, Cor Lamers.

It is not yet known how the mayor contracted the virus or if any of his staff have been infected. He is continuing to work from home.
