Own goal seals Ajax defeat in first Champions League game
An own goal from Nicolás Tagliafico remained the only goal of the match when Ajax met Liverpool at home in the first match of their Champions League campaign on Wednesday night.
Elsewhere in Group D, Atalanta beat Danish side FC Midtjylland 4-0 away putting the Italians top of the group after one game.
‘We were unlucky and did not score but we did create enough opportunities,’ coach Erik ten Hag told broadcaster NOS after the match. ‘We were missing the 1%.’
The four teams return to Champions League action on Tuesday, when Liverpool welcome Midtjylland to Anfield and Ajax travel to Atalanta. ‘Based on tonight’s other Group D fixture, the Dutch side have the more difficult task,’ the Uefa website’s commentators said.
