An error by a ChristenUnie MP has given a narrow majority in parliament to a motion to give healthcare workers a structural pay rise.

The motion, the third calling for more pay for nurses in the past three months, was passed by 69 to 67 votes after ChristenUnie parliamentarian Stieneke van der Graaf voted in favour. She said later this had been a mistake.

The four-party coalition, which includes ChristenUnie, is opposed to giving healthcare workers a pay rise on top the agreement reached earlier this year and two bonuses for their efforts during the coronavirus pandemic.

Ministers are not required to carry out motions which win majority approval.
