The right-wing Liberal VVD remains by far in the lead in the latest poll of polls and is on target to win 38 to 42 seats – or 26.6% of the vote – if there were a general election tomorrow.

The poll of polls, a combination of three separate opinion polls, shows the position of the party of prime minister Mark Rutte is unchanged on the previous edition some two months ago.

Geert Wilders’ far right PVV has consolidated its position in second place, on 16 to 20 seats in the 150 seat parliament, or a maximum 10.2% support. Wilders has been highly visible of late, both in his attacks on the government over nurses’ pay and in court, where he was recently cleared of inciting racial hatred and discrimination.

The ruling CDA, which had benefited from its recent leadership contest remains on 12 to 16 seats, or around 10% of the vote. And despite criticism of his performance as health minister, party leader Hugo de Jonge is still the third most respected minister, poll compiler Tom Louwerse said.

D66, which has just elected Sigrid Kaag as leader, is one seat behind the CDA, as are the two left wing opposition parties GroenLinks and the PvdA.

The Socialists and far right Forum voor Democratie are both on 8 to 12 seats, or up to 7.5% support.

The combined performance of the two far right parties would give them a maximum of around 17.7% of the national vote. The biggest share of the vote the PVV has ever had was in early 2016, when it polled 26%.
