The temperature has topped 30 Celsius for the seventh day in a row at the De Bilt weather station near Utrecht, setting a new record.

The previous record – of six days of 30 Celsius plus temperatures, was set in 1941 and equaled in 1975. In Maastricht in 1975 there were no less than15 tropical days in a row, but this year 10 is likely to be the maximum, Weerplaza meteorologist Leon Saris said.

Weather forecasters expect the high temperatures to continue on Thursday but to fall to below 30 Celsius on Friday, as more rain and cloud moves in.
