Dutch shipbuilder Damen is cutting its workforce by 1,050 jobs in the Netherlands and Romania as the impact of coranvirus is felt across the offshore sector.

Most of the jobs – 870 – will go in Romania, with the rest being cut at the company’s operations in Gorinchem, Schiedam and Bergum, the Financieele Dagblad said.

A spokesman told the paper that the company hopes to keep Dutch job losses to a minimum by transferring staff to other divisions within the group.

The family-owned firm, which posted a loss of €287m last year, has a global workforce of 13,000.
