Alkmaar football club AZ has decided to drop legal protests about the Dutch FA’s decision to declare Ajax winner of this year’s abandoned Eredivisie season.

AZ  had protested about the decision to put Ajax on top on points, given they had beaten the Amsterdammers in both matches.

Now that the draw for the second qualifying round of the Champions League has taken place, pitching AZ against Czech side Viktoria Plzen, the club has decided not to press ahead with its campaign.

‘The interests of AZ were always paramount,’ club director Robert Eenhoorn said on the AZ website. ‘That is why we asked Uefa to look at the KNVB’s decision. But now the draw has taken place, we have our answer. We are accepting it for now, and focusing on the future.’

Ajax, as Eredivise winners, are set to qualify directly for the Champions League group rounds.
