Transport police and inspectors have handed out some 450 fines to people who refused to wear a face mask on public transport, since the requirement was introduced on June 1.

Two-thirds of the fines were issued after July 1, when public transport was made accessible to everyone, not just people in essential jobs.

Everyone over the age of 12 is required to wear a mask on buses, trams and trains because of the impossibility of keeping 1.5 metres apart.

Pedro Peters, director of umbrella organisation OV-NL said the number of fines is ‘not large’, mainly because public transport is not currently busy because of the summer holidays.
