Police in The Hague have arrested several dozen demonstrators who were protesting at the coronavirus measures close to the city’s main railway station.

Police estimate some 200 people took part in the demo, which was broken up on the orders of acting mayor Johan Remkes.

The demonstration had not been first cleared with city hall but when demonstrators began gathering Remkes said the meeting could go ahead at a proscribed location, provided the 1.5 metre distance was adhered to, broadcaster NOS said.

When demonstrators began moving to other areas, Remkes ordered the police to move in.

There was also a small demonstration in Utrecht, which included anti-vaxxers, anti-5G campaigners and a group opposed to broadcaster NOS.

Local broadcaster RTV Utrecht put the total at around 100. There were no arrests and police told Nu.nl the demonstration was peaceful. Some of the demonstrators hugged each other, but no-one was fined.

A few demonstrators also gathered on the Dam in Amsterdam, Nu.nl said.
