Dutch Covid-19 hospital admissions rise by 14, new figures show

The number of people admitted to hospital with Covid-19 rose by just 14 in the latest update from national statistics agency RIVM.

In total, 11,629 people have now been hospitalised for coronavirus at some point since the epidemic began.

The official death toll rose by 33 to 5,743, including deaths which were not reported in the previous few days. However, the real figure is likely to be up to 40% higher, as the official total only includes people who have tested positive for the disease.

A further 198 people have tested positive for the virus, taking that total to 44,447. Again, health officials say, this does not represent the real spread of the virus among the 17 million-strong Dutch population.

Meanwhile, the number of people who are confirmed to have coronavirus at the country’s nursing and residential care homes has reached 7,900, of whom 2,500 have died, health minister Hugo de Jonge told MPs earlier in the day.

A further 4,550 nursing home residents are suspected of having the disease, but this has not been confirmed, De Jonge told MPs in a briefing.

This means some 7% of residential care patients have been found to have coronavirus and 2% have died. Visits to care homes were banned in mid March and are only now being started up again.

The number of infections at nursing homes has dropped steadily in recent weeks, De Jonge said.
