Police break up illegal poker contest, fine 53 people for breaking coronavirus rules

Some 53 people who were taking part in an illegal poker tournament on an industrial estate in Zaandam have been fined for breaking social distancing laws, police said on Saturday.

Police raided the property on Friday evening and the players came from all over the country, police said. Seven people were taken to the police station because they did not have ID with them.

Meanwhile, in Groningen police have fined 15 students who were members of the Vindicat student club for not meeting social distancing rules at the fraternity club house on the Grote Markt.

According to the Telegraaf, six police cars were at the club house at around 12.30 on Friday night after receiving reports of possible party.

Vindicat hit the headlines at the start of the coronavirus crisis for refusing to cancel a skiing trip for 900 members to northern Italy.
