The official death toll from coronavirus rose by 66 in the Netherlands overnight, the public health institute RIVM said in its Sunday update.

This takes the total number of people who have undergone tests and died of coronavirus to 4,475, although the true total is likely to be far higher.

A further 75 people have been admitted to hospital, taking the total number of hospitalisations to 10,456, the RIVM said.

The number of deaths and hospitalisations are both down on last Sunday. The weekend reports tend to be lower because of a time lag in reporting. Nevertheless, the figures show a continual downward trend, the RIVM said.

The national statistics agency CBS said on Friday that some 4,300 people died in the week of April 13-19, which is around 1,400 more than usually die at this time of year.

Given that the official coronavirus death toll only includes people who have been tested for the disease, the CBS figures give a ‘more complete picture’, the agency said. The official RIVM figures give a death total of 794 for week 16.
