Ajax midfielder Donny van de Beek has rejected the advances of London club Tottenham Hotspur in favour of Real Madrid, the Telegraaf reported on Friday.

Real had been wooing Van de Beek since the summer but have now brought sufficient money to the table, the paper said. The Spanish club will reportedly be paying €55m   for the player who will make the move after this season is over.

The deal, if it goes ahead, will make Van Beek the fourth most expensive Dutch player ever, after Virgil van Dijk, Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt.

The 22-year-old’s future had been the subject of much speculation in the summer transfer round, but he opted to stay with Ajax for a further season, extending his contract to June 2020.

Ajax take on Willem II on Friday and on Tuesday meet Valencia in their key Champions League qualifier.
