Dutch meat substitute company The Vegetarian Butcher has won a contract to supply burgers to Burger King in Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

The Utrecht-based company, founded in 2007, was bought by Unilever at the end of last year and will now provide the protein for the Rebel Whopper in 2,500 Burger King outlets from Tuesday.

Financial details were not disclosed.

In the US, Burger King’s vegetarian burgers are provided by Impossible Foods which, according to the Financial Times, is still working to clear its products for sale in Europe.

Main rival McDonalds works with new market entrant Beyond Meat.
