Some 60 people had to be evacuated from their homes in Amsterdam West around 4.30 on Friday morning after fire broke out in a building on the Eerste Helmerstraat.

The fire sent showers of sparks over the surrounding properties, and it took the fire brigade several hours to declare the fire was out. No-one was living in the property at the time.

The front wall of the building, which was being renovated at the time, has also come loose from the side walls and will be dismantled by crane, according to the Parool.
