Specialty supermarket group Marqt is being taken over by Udea, the parent company of organic supermarket chain Ekoplaza, the two companies said in press release.

‘This alliance will maintain the Marqt mission, generate major operational and logistics synergies and will have a sold basis and financial structure to build for the future,’ the joint statement said.

Marqt, which said earlier this autumn it would close its large branches on Amsterdam’s Rembrandtplein and on the Hofweg in The Hague, currently has 19 outlets.

The brand will continue and will focus on smaller food and drink stores and online sales, the statement said. More shops will now close and the company will work on the basis to 10 to 12 profitable shops.

Marqt was founded in 2008  and in June that it would start looking for ‘strategic alliances’ in an effort to bolster its finances.
