The Dutch women’s football team will take on Japan in the round of 16 after beating Canada 2-1 to win Group E at the World Cup in France.

Oranje, the current European champions, had been criticised for their lacklustre performance in the tournament so far, despite wins over New Zealand and Cameroon but managed to boost their performance in the final group game.

‘I’m proud of the squad,’ said head coach Sarina Wiegman after the game. ‘We were much better as a team.’

The tie will take place in Rennes at 9pm on June 25. The winner of that game will take on either China or Italy in the quarter finals.
