Six parties have agreed a deal to run Gelderland’s provincial government for the next four years, but nationalist party Forum voor Democratie will not be involved.

Forum won eight seats in the regional elections in March, the same number as the VVD, which narrowly topped the poll. The VVD have formed a coalition with CDA, GroenLinks, PvdA, ChristenUnie and SGP.

The six parties hold 33 of the 55 seats in Gelderland’s provincial assembly, giving them a comfortable majority. The VVD will have two aldermen on the seven-member executive committee, including the only woman, Christianne van der Wal.

Gelderland is the third of the 12 provinces to announce a new regional government, after Groningen and Drenthe concluded their negotiations a week ago. So far at least five parties have been needed to form a coalition, none of which have included Forum.

The party dropped out of the coalition talks in Gelderland early on after saying they wanted to abandon the province’s commitments on wind energy, according to Mark Boumans, who co-ordinated the negotiations. Details of the new coalition agreement are due to be announced later on Monday.
