Ajax’ adventures in the Champions League, which came to an end on Wednesday after a last-minute goal for Spurs, has generated almost €100m for the club, the Financieele Dagblad said on Friday.

The money comes from both European football body Uefa and from ticket sales for the matches, which included high profile games against Real Madrid and Juventus.

Contributions from Uefa, including bonuses and television rights have brought in at least €70.8m, the paper said. On top of that, the club has earned at least €15.7m from ticket sales.

In addition, merchandising will continue to bring in more cash, as the club’s European campaign boosted its popularity around the globe. And later this year, when other transfers are finalised, the total financial benefits will become really clear, the paper said.

Ajax midfielder Frenkie de Jong has already agreeed a move to FC Barcelona for a record Eredivisie price of €75m which could mount up to €86m when bonuses are taken into account.

Captain Matthijs de Ligt is also top of the wish list of many of Europe’s leading clubs.
