Fledgling nationalist party Forum voor Democratie may be one of five parties forming a coalition to run Flevoland province, following last month’s provincial elections.

The party won the most votes nationwide and was the biggest in three of the 12 provinces.

Businesswoman Annemarie van Gaal, who has been charged with putting a coalition together in Flevoland, is recommending that Forum, the VVD, PvdA, CDA and ChristenUnie continue the negotiations to form a provincial administration.

According to the Volkskrant, Forum has said it is willing to compromise on climate policy in order to ensure it has a seat at the negotiating table. The party, set up two years ago by Thierry Baudet, is opposed to wind turbine developments.

In Flevoland, however, the party is prepared to accept that turbines already in the planning will be built, in return for a moratorium on further development, the Volkskrant said.

The five parties also back the long-awaited expansion of Lelystad airport, which the government sees as an overspill airport for Schiphol.

In Zuid Holland, the other province where Forum emerged as the biggest party, Forum, the VVD and CDA have been in preliminary coalition talks. Another party will be needed to ensure a majority.

Forum has been cut out of the negotiations in six other provinces because of its position on climate change.
