Wind turbines in the Netherlands generated a record amount of energy in March, thanks in part to the gales which hit the country in the first half of the month.

In total, the country’s wind turbines generated 1.44 billion kilowatt hours of electricity – the highest amount every recorded, according to website energieopwek.nl, which monitors sustainable energy sources, website Nu.nl said.

The total amount of electricity generated by the wind was equivalent to the usage of all the households in the Netherlands combined, Martien Visser, of the Hanze hbo college in Groningen told website Nu.nl.

Domestic use accounts for some 20% of energy usage in the Netherlands.
