Amsterdam plans to build 10,500 rooms for students by 2022, of which all but 1,500 will be built in the city itself, housing alderman Laurens Ivens has announced.

The homes will be a combination of permanent and temporary, some with shared facilities, and service costs will be kept at an ‘acceptable level’ the alderman said.

The city has increased the number of rooms set aside for students and young people by over 11,000 over the past four years but high prices and shortages continue to be a major problem.

‘It is important that Amsterdam protects youngsters and students from dodgy landlords who are taking advantage of their need for housing,’ Ivens said in a statement.

The new accommodation will be built by both project developers and housing corporations and will have a maximum rent of €607 for homes build on land owned by the city council.
