Turnstiles help cut fare dodging on Dutch trains by one third
The number of fare dodgers caught on Dutch trains has dropped 34% over the past three years – partly due to the introduction of turnstiles at more and more stations, Dutch railway company NS said on Friday.
This year so far, 230,000 people have been fined for not having a valid ticket, compared with 350,000 in 2015. In total, 76 of the country’s railway stations are now closed off to people without a public transport card.
At the same time, the number of reports of aggression on trains is down 27% and almost 90% of passengers now say they feel safe on the train, up from 80% in 2015.
