New fathers as well as mothers in single-sex couples will have five days paid leave after the birth of their child from next year, rather than two as at present.

MPs on Wednesday voted in favour of the plan, which brings the Netherlands more into line with other EU countries. The measure was included in the coalition agreement.

The new rule will come into effect from January 1 2019. In July, the legislation will be further expanded by a further five-weeks leave, payable at 70% of salary.
