Dutch family-owned supermarket group Jumbo is looking at potential expansion in Belgium, the company said at the presentation of its half-yearly figures on Wednesday.

‘Jumbo has begun to get to know the Belgian market and has signed contracts for its first supermarket locations,’ the company said in a statement. ‘To ensure the introduction of Jumbo to the Belgian market runs smoothly, we are currently building up a dedicated Jumbo Belgium operation.’

The company has also bought the Netherlands’ biggest online recipe and food advice website Smulweb.

Jumbo booked a 3.8% rise in sales in the first six months of this year, taking the total to almost €3.9bn. The company, which also owns the La Place restaurant group, has a 19.5% share of the Dutch supermarket business.

‘The continual positive sales developments in the first half of 2018 are a strong foundation to our ambition to be the omnichannel food retailer of the Netherlands,’ said chief exective Frits van Eerd.

Albert Heijn is currently Dutch market leader.
