Morocco reinstates conscription, unclear if Dutch Moroccans must comply

King Mohammed of Morocco has reinstated conscription in the country after parliament approved the move, public broadcaster NOS reports.

It is unclear if this will affect dual Dutch Moroccan nationals living in the Netherlands. Conscription applies to all young people between 19 and 25.

‘The king called on people living abroad to do something for their country,’ correspondent Willemijn de Koning told NOS. ‘But as long as they stay in the Netherlands they will be safe from being called up.’

According to De Koning, activists in Morocco think the move is aimed at punishing people for the social unrest and protests of the past few years.
