Young women now outnumber men in most of the Netherlands’ university cities, according to new research by the national statistics office CBS.

The difference is greatest in Utrecht, where there are 100 women aged 20 to 25 for every 73 men of the same age, the CBS said. Leiden, Maastricht, Nijmegen and Wageningen also have fewer than 80 men in their early 20s per 100 women.

The situation is completely different in the towns where the Netherlands’ universities of technology are located. In Delft, for example, there are 170 men in their early 20s for every 100 women, a figure which has worsened in the past 10 years, despite the fact more women are studying technical subjects.

In total, there are 100 female students in the Netherlands for every 96 men, even though fewer girl babies are born than boys.
